Reading in EYFS

We believe that reading is the key for unlocking the rest of the curriculum and vital for pupils' success.

 At the end of their reception year, children at the expected level of development for comprehension will:- * Demonstrate understanding of what has been read to them by retelling stories and narratives using their own words and recently introduced vocabulary; * Anticipate - where appropriate - key events in stories; * Use and understand recently introduced vocabulary during discussions about stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems and during role-play. At the end of their reception year, children at the expected level of development for word reading will:- * Say a sound for each letter in the alphabet and at least 10 digraphs (two letter which make one sound eg. Ch, sh, oo) * Read words consistent with their phonic knowledge by sound-blending * Read aloud simple sentences and books that are consistent with their phonic knowledge, including some common exception words.

Supporting Your Child At Home with Reading

You can support your child’s reading development by regularly sharing stories with them, this helps them to learn how stories start and finish, learn that books can transport them elsewhere, expand their vocabulary and expose them to language they might not hear in ordinary conversations. Most importantly though, it’s an opportunity for you to share the enjoyment of stories with your child. Engagement in reading is a good predictor of later academic success.

5 years old if they are read to:

  • Never read to: 4,662 words;
  • 1-2 times per week: 63,570 words;
  • 3-5 times per week: 169,520 words;
  • Daily: 296,660 words;
  • And five books a day: 1,483,300 words.

Please follow the link  here to see the top recommended books for reception age children which we actively promote as our ‘Star Readers’. Regular sharing of books and discussion of children's ideas and responses helps children to develop their early enjoyment and understanding of books.
